Massive Newark Student Walk Out Planned 5/22 - Students Facing Disciplinary Repression

Decarcerate the Garden State preemptively calls upon the administration of Newark to have no disciplinary measures on students that engage in this walk out - any attempt to criminalize or discipline the students must be met by protest from the wider community - throughout NJ.

We have been notified by several students in several schools about the intimidation tactics begin waged this time around against tomorrow's inevitable outcome. From calls being made to parents, to letters and possible LOCKDOWN DRILLS BEING PREPARED at the time that the students should walkout; these acts are a clear indication as to why our resistance is crucial. In history, we have read about the struggle our ancestors were faced with... from revolutions to civil rights; this nation has been molded by the masses, by the people who weren't afraid to challenge their oppressors. OUR TIME IS NOW. OUR MOMENT HAS ARRIVED ONCE AGAIN. WE ARE THE ONES WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. Our public schools, our community will not go down without a fight! Please be mindful that these administrators are only following orders from Cami Anderson, and will do ANYTHING that they are told to do due to fear of losing their jobs.
Newark Students: rise! Newark Students: it's time to reclaim our power! Newark students: stand up, fight back! We will not end until our demands are met. No one will stop us. This is ‪#‎ournewark‬.

The Newark Students Union has been fighting back against state control of our public schools for the last three years. We've seen walkouts, sit-ins, and shutdowns all over the city in a collective effort to save our public education. This year, EIGHT SCHOOLS are getting "turned-around" and are being deemed as FAILURES through arbitrary standards set by a corporate agenda trying to privatize our school system. The plan is to "turn-around" all of our schools so corporations can profit off of our education! Teachers are also having their union rights revoked and face forced relocation under new agreements, with non-tenured teachers facing immediate removal. If your school is not on the list this year, then it will be on the chopping block next year! Parents, Students and Teachers are taking back control of what is rightfully OURS! We are calling all students in the entire district to WALK-OUT in protest of Governor Chris Christie's plan to destabilize our communities by shutting down our schools! NEWARK STUDENTS- STAND UP FIGHT BACK!

OUR DEMANDS-
1.FULL LOCAL CONTROL, NOT CHRISTIE CONTROL
2.FULLY FUNDED COMMUNITY SCHOOLS, NOT "TURN-AROUND" SCHOOLS
3.CHARTER ACCOUNTABILITY: HOLD CHARTER SCHOOLS UP TO THE SAME STANDARDS AS PUBLIC SCHOOLS (STANDARDIZED TESTS, ALLOCATION OF FUNDING, AND EASE OF ADMISSION)

PLAN OF ACTION-
ALL SCHOOLS MUST WALKOUT AND MEET ALL OTHER SCHOOLS AT CITY HALL (920 BROAD STREET) AT 12:30PM ON FRIDAY MAY 22, 2015

PLEASE SHARE AND JOIN THE MOVEMENT USING THE #OURNEWARK AND #NPSWALKOUT2015 HASHTAGS

WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT OUR CHAINS!

  1. Do not give up. I am an alumnus of Newark public schools. I will keep sharing videos and posts regarding your efforts. All roads lead to Trenton. Christie needs to resign. Cami needs to resign.

  2. I am emailing news organizations. As the saying goes, "the revolution will be televised." Please do the same. Let us bring New Jersey into Newark so it can open its eyes to the reality of things.
